Burak Maviş: Higher Education Plagued by Human Trafficking, Plagiarism, and Fake Diploma Scandals

Cyprus Turkish Teachers' Union (KTÖS) General Secretary Burak Maviş stated that "higher education is associated more with human trafficking, plagiarism, and fake diploma scandals than with education and science." He pointed out that due to lack of oversight, higher education in the country continues to experience crises.

Maviş claimed that the higher education system is facing one crisis after another due to the mentality of "more students, more universities, less salary, and fewer staff" driven by a mass tourism approach. He criticized the boutique university approach, which treats education as a commodity and students as customers, leading to corruption, plagiarism, and the issuance of unearned diplomas.

Furthermore, Maviş questioned how the Higher Education Planning, Evaluation, Accreditation, and Coordination Council (YÖDAK), responsible for overseeing universities, could identify cases of human trafficking, plagiarism, and diploma fraud when even its own members' diplomas are subject to legal challenges.

He emphasized the need to focus on solutions and establish direct relations with the EU amidst economic instability, rising costs, criminal activities, cultural interventions, and corruption in the country. Maviş also criticized the erosion of political ethics and the economic discontent prevailing in the region.

Maviş underscored the necessity of demanding rights from the Greek Cypriot political elite, who, according to him, violate the rights of Turkish Cypriots and exploit them for political gain. He advocated for pursuing a solution and establishing direct relations with the EU to alleviate pressures from both sides and to uphold international law.

In conclusion, Maviş asserted that the only remedy for the problems facing the country lies in a two-community, two-zone, federal framework within the EU, urging for renewed efforts towards a comprehensive solution under the leadership of special representative Mrs. Maria Holguin.
