In a session of the Republic Assembly General Assembly, discussions focused on current issues including electricity, imported meat, and labor matters.

Initially, the motion to allow the Temporary and Special Committee, formed to Discuss the European Union Compliance Law Proposals, to continue its work during the General Assembly session was unanimously approved.

Subsequently, UBP MP Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu and CTP MP Armağan Candan presented their report on the meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in Oslo, which addressed the issue of Varosha (Maraş).

HASİPOĞLU

In his speech about the report, Hasipoğlu emphasized that Varosha is a sensitive issue and that it was the first time it was discussed in such depth at PACE. He conveyed their views to the committee, noting that the 1984 UN Security Council resolution is outdated.

Hasipoğlu stated that the Immovable Property Commission is now active, making the resolution obsolete. He criticized the Greek Cypriots for rejecting all solution proposals and described the report as unfair.

Hasipoğlu argued that the report should be withdrawn, expressing opposition to its contents. He also criticized the omission of information provided by the Immovable Property Commission from the report, claiming that it compromised the report's objectivity. He mentioned that they would present their views again at the meeting at the end of June.

CANDAN

CTP MP Armağan Candan noted that it was the first detailed discussion of Cyprus at PACE in many years, and the report was prompted by the Turkish side's Varosha initiative.

Candan explained that the rapporteur conducted investigations on the island, with the findings and views on the Cyprus issue reflected in the draft report. He noted that the final content of the report has yet to be finalized.

According to Candan, the current draft calls for the Turkish side to reverse its Varosha initiative and maintains that a two-state solution is not viable, advocating for a federal solution instead. He warned that ignoring UN resolutions on Varosha could place the Turkish Cypriot side in a disadvantageous position.

Candan stated that discussions on the report would continue, aiming to reach a conclusion by the end of June. He also touched on their useful meetings in Norway.
