Presidency Crisis in Parliament: Confusion Continues in UBP, CTP Presents Conditions
The crisis over the election of the Speaker of Parliament continues for the fourth consecutive day, with the ruling National Unity Party (UBP) seeking a way out for the current Speaker Zorlu Töre, who remains in the hospital and wishes to be re-elected.
UBP's efforts to hold a vote for Kutlu Evren as the new Speaker have been met with resistance, while the main opposition, the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), insists on early elections as a condition for cooperation.
According to information obtained by Kıbrıs Postası, CTP Deputy and Deputy Speaker Fazilet Özdenefe refrained from opening the parliamentary session today, as her party’s demand for early elections has not yet been accepted.
Despite four rounds of voting, no Speaker has been elected. UBP is in a difficult position, as Töre, currently under medical treatment, wishes to remain in office, while the party pushes for Evren’s candidacy.
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, who has been in individual meetings with UBP deputies regarding the crisis, is expected to visit both Töre and UBP Deputy Ali Pilli, who is also receiving treatment in the hospital. Üstel plans to hold a meeting with deputies in Parliament following these visits.
