Tatar: Expanded Meeting Could Take Place in the Coming Months
Following his return from the informal dinner in New York, President Ersin Tatar stated that an expanded meeting could be held in the upcoming months. Tatar highlighted the significance of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' acknowledgment that there was no common ground between the parties.
President Tatar, who attended an informal dinner hosted by Guterres alongside Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, was welcomed at Ercan Airport by various officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Fikri Ataoğlu and UBP General Secretary Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu.
Speaking at the airport, Tatar emphasized the importance of the dinner within the current diplomatic context of the Cyprus issue. He recalled his previous suggestion for a 4+1 format meeting and noted Guterres' mention of a potential expanded informal meeting, which aligns with the Turkish Cypriot side's request.
Tatar reiterated that any formal negotiations should only proceed based on the recognition of sovereign equality and equal international status. He criticized past federal solution attempts, citing the failure of talks at Crans-Montana in 2017 due to the Greek Cypriot stance.
Regarding Guterres' statement on the lack of common ground, Tatar viewed this as a significant diplomatic message, reflecting an understanding of the Turkish Cypriot position. He also stressed the importance of cooperation on issues that benefit both communities, such as opening new crossing points and enhancing economic ties, though he remains cautious about formal negotiations without proper conditions.
Tatar concluded that the informal dinner was useful and underscored the continued importance of diplomacy and dialogue, noting that future discussions could include the involvement of Türkiye and focus on alternative solutions beyond a federal framework.
