Özyiğit to Prime Minister Üstel: "Go to the People and Renew Your Mandate!"
Former leader of the Communal Democracy Party (TDP) and former Education Minister Cemal Özyiğit has called on Prime Minister Ünal Üstel to "renew his mandate by going to the people." Speaking to Kıbrıs Postası, Özyiğit urged Üstel to hold early elections following recent parliamentary tensions.
Özyiğit noted that although Üstel won his party's leadership contest against Hasan Taçoy with strong support, he later faced difficulties during the Parliament Speaker election. Özyiğit expressed doubts over Ziya Öztürkler’s election as Parliament Speaker, suggesting it was "questionable." He highlighted Üstel’s parliamentary majority of 29 deputies yet noted the presence of 5-6 blank votes in the speaker election, suggesting internal dissent.
Predicting that Üstel may face challenges in securing support for the upcoming budget discussions, Özyiğit also suggested that behind-the-scenes deals might influence the outcome. Emphasizing the instability shown by recent events, he concluded, "Üstel should resign, call for elections, and renew the public’s confidence. That is the right course of action."
