The move aims to create a unified alphabet across the Turkic world. While the common 29 letters will remain, dialects will use the additional letters as needed. The new arrangement seeks to standardize writing from Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan to Turkey and Kazakhstan.
"Consensus Reached on 34-Letter Common Alphabet"
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced the completion of work on the new alphabet, initiated in 2022, and stated that consensus was reached on a 34-letter structure by September 2024. Speaking at the Turkic States Organization (TDT) Summit, Erdoğan called on member states to adopt the new alphabet, highlighting that Turkey, Azerbaijan, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are ready, while Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan should take initiative to transition.
New Letters to be Added
The added letters will include Q, X, Ū, Ñ, and Ə. The familiar 29 letters will remain part of the alphabet.
- Q will be included as an alternative to the hard "K" sound.
- X is commonly used in Azerbaijani.
- Ū represents the Kazakh version of the Turkish "U."
- Ñ is a nasal sound found in Kazakh and Turkmen.
- Ə, used in Cyrillic, will also be part of the alphabet.
