KTEZO: The Parliamnet Speaker Election Has Lost Its Meaning
The Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Commerce and Crafts (KTEZO) has criticized the events surrounding the Parliamentary Speaker election, stating that the election has "lost its meaning." According to the Chamber, the election has turned into a vote of confidence for the government.
In a statement, the Chamber remarked, "Should we call this a festive life, or a calamity? We have lost not only the ability to govern but also the seriousness. The situation is clear to us as it is to everyone. The Speaker of the Parliament was neither elected nor able to be elected. The majority could not be reached."
The statement further expressed that it was "unacceptable" to consider double-marked votes as valid for MPs while invalidating them for citizens. "Trying to legitimize double-marked votes implies 'everyone is equal, but we are privileged.' This is pure disgrace," the statement said.
The Chamber claimed that the current crisis, chaos, and deadlock in the Parliament reflect the government's efforts to avoid a no-confidence vote. It also suggested that those defending double-marked votes were merely trying to hide the truth.
"Let no one hide behind their fingers and treat us like fools. This is a government crisis. Therefore, new steps are necessary. Either the parties will sit down at the table, or a date will be set to go to the people again," the statement continued.
The Chamber concluded that with a majority unable to elect a Speaker within the Parliament, the government cannot continue, and no progress can be made on the budget. "The country's issues will only continue to escalate. The Parliament is ours, the country is ours. This cannot go on."
