Akansoy Confirms CTP Met with VP Yılmaz

Akansoy confirmed that during their meeting with Yılmaz, CTP reiterated its stance regarding the nomination of a candidate for the Presidency of the Assembly. "If the National Unity Party (UBP) wants to nominate their own candidate, they must secure 26 votes," he stated. He also highlighted that CTP has consistently called for a common candidate to resolve the political deadlock.

In their discussions, Akansoy noted that CTP’s leadership has been firm in advocating for dialogue, which has historically led to joint candidates with broad support. He also pointed out that CTP does not recognize the previous claim to the Assembly presidency by Ziya Öztürkler, which led to his resignation.

Regarding the ongoing political developments, Akansoy expressed that the internal crises within UBP and the party's attempts to bypass democratic processes highlighted the importance of adhering to legal principles. "This process has been educational for Turkish Cypriots. The legal framework has prevailed," he remarked.

As for early elections, Akansoy confirmed that CTP remains insistent on their call for early elections, which will be discussed in the upcoming parliamentary session. "We know that UBP is not in favor of early elections, but we are unwavering in our demand," he said, adding that the current government’s actions are harming the people.

When discussing the upcoming presidential elections, Akansoy affirmed that CTP would field its own candidate, with Tufan Erhürman being the preferred choice. "Public opinion polls indicate that Erhürman is ahead, and we will make our final announcement after our congress in March," he said. He ruled out the possibility of supporting an independent candidate.
