"Ali Kişmir Is Not on Trial; the Freedoms of the Turkish Cypriot Community Are" says Kişmir

Recalling his earlier statement, "I want to stand trial," Kişmir explained his stance:
"I requested the prosecutor not to withdraw my right to be tried. Even if they withdraw the case, it could resurface later. Since I committed no crime, I want to stand trial and believe I will be acquitted."

Kişmir anticipates the first witness, likely a senior military official, will testify regarding allegations tied to his article. Among witnesses are academics and professors.

"Possibility of Trial Under Detention"

Kişmir expressed concern over the potential referral of his case to the High Criminal Court, which traditionally results in detention:
"In cases referred to the High Criminal Court, 98% of individuals face detention, with only 2% acquitted. My lawyer, Hasan Esendağlı, believes I will be among the 2% acquitted."

The charges accuse Kişmir of "damaging the honor and dignity of soldiers." He maintains his article merely referenced a meeting at a location without derogatory implications.

A Call for Solidarity

Kişmir emphasized the broader implications of his trial:
"This is not just about me. On November 26, it is not Ali Kişmir being tried, but the freedoms of the Turkish Cypriot community, press freedom, and freedom of expression. We must stand together outside the court and fight for these values."

Kişmir also highlighted the pressures faced in his 20-year journalism career, underscoring the importance of protecting fundamental freedoms in the face of ongoing challenges.
