Christodoulides: The Status Quo in Cyprus is Unsustainable
Republic of Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has declared that the current status quo in Cyprus is unsustainable for the Greek Cypriot people, the EU, and the region.
Speaking at the 20th Economist Conference in Nicosia, Christodoulides emphasized, “It is time for an independent, reunified Cyprus capable of maintaining and enhancing its role in the region. This is vital for Europe and the world.”
According to Fileleftheros, Christodoulides highlighted the inaugural strategic dialogue between South Cyprus and the US as evidence of strengthening bilateral relations and a shared commitment to building a future of trust and cooperation in the region.
He referred to South Cyprus as a "predictable and stable partner" for the US and announced that preparations for a roadmap detailing specific outcomes of this dialogue are underway. He also hinted at forthcoming developments that would demonstrate the practical benefits of this strategic partnership.
UK and US Ambassadors Acknowledge Cyprus’ Regional Role
The conference also featured remarks from UK High Commissioner Michael Tatham and US Ambassador to Cyprus Julie Fisher, both of whom underlined South Cyprus’ significance in regional affairs.
Tatham, on his fourth day in office, praised South Cyprus’ role in facilitating humanitarian aid to Gaza and evacuations from crisis zones. He reaffirmed the UK’s involvement in the Cyprus issue as a UN Security Council permanent member and as a “pen holder” for the matter. Tatham expressed anticipation for developments following recent talks in New York.
Ambassador Fisher highlighted the positive dynamics in Cyprus-US relations, which she expects to continue under the new US administration. She commended South Cyprus for its contributions to crisis management, including civilian evacuations from Sudan 18 months ago, and praised the commitment of Christodoulides and his team, describing it as “incredible.”
