Ali Kişmir’s Trial Adjourned to December 19
The trial of journalist Ali Kişmir, facing charges under a legal provision carrying a potential 10-year prison sentence, has been postponed to December 19 due to the prosecution withdrawing its witness.
Kişmir, President of the Press Workers' Union (Basın-Sen) and a journalist and writer, is being prosecuted for a social media post. The case, heard before Judge Zehra Yalkut Bilgeç at the Nicosia District Court, saw Prosecutor Hasan Boşnak representing the Attorney General’s office, while Kişmir was defended by Hasan Esendağlı, President of the Cyprus Turkish Bar Association.
Following the hearing, Basın-Sen issued a statement to the Turkish News Agency Cyprus (TAK), explaining that the prosecution had decided not to call its witness, who was unable to attend due to health reasons. The prosecution plans to present the investigating officer as a witness at the next hearing.
The Nicosia District Court has adjourned the trial to December 19, 2024.
