DP Responds to Criticism from YDP: 'It’s Disheartening'

The DP emphasized that it would continue to support the government in line with the public’s preferences and votes, and drew attention to groups within the YDP attempting to create chaos and division. The statement also underlined that these groups exhibited behaviors that contradicted both the mission of the YDP and the country's realities.

The full statement from the DP is as follows:

"The Democratic Party (DP) will continue to provide necessary support to the 28th Coalition Government in line with the preferences and support of the Turkish Cypriot people, demonstrated during the last parliamentary elections. However, we were disheartened, astonished, and regretfully informed that on December 23, 2024, the Rebirth Party (YDP) in its Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting used internal issues as an excuse to criticize the DP, a partner in the 28th Coalition Government.

Similar attacks from the YDP have been made in the past, but in the interest of the government’s well-being and political ethics, we have only made necessary reminders. Unfortunately, some unfortunate individuals within the YDP, who are disconnected from both the party's mission and the realities of the country, continue to attempt to create chaos. These individuals have even suggested that the Republic of Cyprus is a burden on Turkey and have dared to criticize the coalition government and its partners. This group continues to evolve, developing into a more advanced version of misguided actions, and we hope that they will remain at this level, keeping in mind the interests of the people and the country.

We, as a partner in the current coalition government, call out to this 'self-proclaimed' group within the YDP: Why have you assumed the role of a Trojan horse instead of supporting the government you are a part of? Are there unseen forces influencing you? Why are you trying to drag the country into chaos under the guise of internal party issues?

To this same unfortunate group, we, as the DP, want to make clear: The DP is a political party founded with the wisdom of the late Founding President Rauf R. Denktaş, and it has a mission grounded in history and a vision focused on the future of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. We adopt constructive policies, and we reject chaos. Be careful, for you might find yourselves buried under the weight of your actions!

We also wish to address the valuable YDP supporters. We want to make it clear that we distinguish you from the group within the YDP that has sought to criticize the DP. Be assured that the DP's doors and hearts are always open to you.

As we have done in the past, the DP will continue to provide the necessary support to the government in line with coalition agreements, contribute to solving the issues of the Turkish Cypriot people, and grow stronger."
