Coldest Days in 50 Years: Agricultural Insurance Committee to Step In

Extreme cold and frost have caused significant losses in the agricultural sector, particularly in the Güzelyurt and Karpaz regions. Farmers’ Union President Mehmet Nizam announced that the Agricultural Insurance Committee would step in to compensate for the damages.

According to the Meteorology Department, the country has recorded the lowest temperatures in the 50-year period from 1975 to 2025. Farmers are deeply concerned as both livestock and crops have been severely affected. Speaking to Kıbrıs Postası, Nizam emphasized that losses would be covered through the Agricultural Insurance scheme.
“The mortality rate among small livestock has increased due to freezing conditions. Newborn animals, in particular, could not survive. Greenhouses have also suffered significant damage, and crops have been affected by frost and ice,” Nizam stated.
He explained that farmers will be able to present their fields to the Agricultural Insurance Assessment Committee for evaluation, ensuring that losses due to frost will be compensated.
Güzelyurt and Karpaz Among the Hardest-Hit Areas
Nizam highlighted that the regions most affected by the frost include Güzelyurt, Famagusta, and parts of Nicosia. However, he noted that the situation was even more severe in Güzelyurt and Karpaz, where agricultural products sustained heavy damage.
