TDP: Secular Education is Indispensable
The Social Democracy Party (TDP) has expressed full support for the emphasis on secular education raised by the teachers' unions, signing a letter presented by Selma Eylem, President of the Cyprus Turkish Secondary Education Teachers' Union (KTOEÖS), and Burak Maviş, General Secretary of the Cyprus Turkish Teachers' Union (KTÖS). The party stressed the need to protect the Turkish Cypriot community and its secular education system.
TDP joined the teachers' unions in supporting a letter sent to Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, which highlighted the importance of secular education and reiterated the necessity to safeguard the secular educational system shaped by the Cyprus Turkish community.
The letter, delivered by KTOEÖS President Selma Eylem and KTÖS General Secretary Burak Maviş, emphasized that secular and scientific education is a constitutional and universal right, which cannot be bargained or compromised.
The letter further pointed out that certain groups, by challenging the constitutional order and targeting teachers and unions advocating for secular education, are fueling polarization and conflict within society. It was also noted that the process is being shaped by covert plans related to the upcoming presidential elections, with threats and pressures being used to push their agenda.
TDP, reflecting its belief in the culture of freedom of belief and expression that has characterized the Cyprus Turkish community, emphasized that it is the duty of every conscientious secular Turkish Cypriot to stand at the forefront of this struggle. The party stressed that the principle of "secularism" in education must not be compromised.
