Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV’s Gündem program, hosted by Ulaş Barış, Maviş criticized the government for failing to present a concrete proposal during a broad consultation meeting at the Republican Assembly, convened at the invitation of Prime Minister Ünal Üstel.
According to Maviş, the real issues that need attention are the problems in schools, such as infrastructure deficiencies and the continued use of container classrooms for lessons. Instead, he argued, the government has deliberately stirred up an unnecessary controversy.
Maviş also commented on the recent reappointment of Ali Murat Başçeri as Turkey’s ambassador to Nicosia, pointing out that his return coincided with student protests in Turkey advocating for secularism. He suggested that the developments in Northern Cyprus regarding the Disciplinary Regulation and its subsequent withdrawal were connected to Başçeri’s influence.
“Turkey Wants to Create Social Polarization in Northern Cyprus”
Maviş alleged that Turkey is attempting to incite social conflict and deepen divisions in Northern Cyprus. He claimed to have received reports suggesting that this effort serves two purposes: consolidating support for President Ersin Tatar ahead of the next elections and using societal tensions in Northern Cyprus to distract from youth protests in Turkey.
“We will never allow anyone to pit Turkish Cypriots against each other,” Maviş stated.
“Verbal Attacks Based on Religion and Conscience”
Maviş also condemned individuals who, under the guise of religious and moral concerns, have resorted to verbal attacks and even profanities against those defending secularism. He criticized those who tell secularists to "go live in South Cyprus," emphasizing that no one has the right to dictate where people should live.
“It's not just teachers who are defending secularism—many citizens share this stance,” Maviş said. He also referenced statements by former Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Denktaş and former Health Minister Izlem Gürçağ Altuğra, who both stressed the importance of upholding Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s principles and secularism.
Maviş concluded by warning against the politicization of issues such as women’s bodies and children's clothing, stressing that these matters should not be exploited for political gain.
