Licensed Web TV Providers in the TRNC Respond to the Broadcasting High Council: Inequality Deepens, No Oversight!

The broadcasters, who operate licensed Web TV channels via the internet, pointed out that despite having applied for and received licenses last year based on the assurance that regulations would be applied equally to all, no concrete steps have been taken by the Broadcasting High Council regarding oversight or enforcement.

In their letter, they highlighted that even today, many Web TV stations continue to broadcast without any licenses, which they described as an "obvious injustice" to those who fulfill their legal obligations.

The broadcasters also criticized a recent reminder letter sent by the Broadcasting High Council regarding license renewal fees. They stated that such reminders, in the context of inequality, lose their legitimacy. The broadcasters further emphasized the need for a transparent explanation on how these fees are reinvested into the sector. Without such transparency, the broadcasters warned that they would unite and adopt a more assertive stance.

According to the information provided by the Broadcasting High Council, there are currently 14 licensed Web TV stations operating across the TRNC. Eleven of them have signed this letter, and the broadcasters have announced plans to create an organized structure to take collective action moving forward.

The organizations that signed the letter include:

  • Hakikat Web TV

  • Kıbrıs Objektif Web TV

  • Kıbrıs Net Haber

  • Gündem Kıbrıs Web TV

  • Kıbrıs Postası Web TV

  • Havadis Kıbrıs Web TV
