Akansoy Slams Repressive Education Policies: "Such Measures Only Deepen Division"

Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Secretary General Asım Akansoy has strongly criticized recent government approaches to the ongoing education crisis in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), warning that repressive policies will only serve to polarize society.

In a public statement shared via his social media account, Akansoy denounced the remarks made by Minister of Public Works and Transport and YDP leader Erhan Arıklı, who had suggested solving education-related issues through "police-like methods" and by framing the matter as a matter of "individual choices."
Akansoy described these ideas as "the pinnacle of irrationality," especially in an area as sensitive and socially impactful as education. "To impose pressure on young children under the guise of freedom and personal choice and steer them in a certain direction is unscientific and unacceptable," he said.
“The Education of the Turkish Cypriot People Must Not Be Politicized”
Akansoy emphasized that education must not be manipulated for political or ideological gain, arguing that such tactics have never solved any societal issues but have instead only exacerbated tensions. He underlined the necessity for scientific and rational solutions that unite rather than divide, insisting that education is a shared societal responsibility.
Respect for Teachers and Collective Values
Highlighting the historic role of Turkish Cypriot teachers, Akansoy said educators have paid a high price to protect the community’s identity and existence. Rather than being targeted or dismissed, teachers deserve respect and recognition. “Neither the teachers nor the Turkish Cypriot people will accept any form of imposition,” he declared.
A Call for Inclusive, Rational Education Policies
Akansoy called on the public to resist divisive political games and instead support a modern, secular, and democratic approach to education. He stressed the need for an education model that embraces all segments of society and safeguards the community’s identity and cultural values.
A Warning to the Government and President Tatar
Finally, Akansoy warned both the government and President Ersin Tatar against marginalizing or antagonizing any segment of the population. He urged them to engage in dialogue with civil society organizations and to base their policies on scientific evidence rather than political calculations.
"Our people's sensitivity to solving the problems in education is clear," Akansoy concluded. "You cannot deceive our people with divisive approaches or political games."
