The KTOEÖS leaders stated that the insults and threats were in response to the recent changes in the "Regulations on Rules and Discipline in Secondary Schools and Educational Institutions" concerning headscarves. They filed their complaints with the Nicosia Police Department in response to these incidents.

Previously, KTOEÖS, along with the Cyprus Turkish Teachers' Union (KTÖS), organized protests against the amendment of the disciplinary regulations. The unions had described the change as an "attack on children's rights" and had placed black wreaths at the Parliament and the Turkish Embassy in Nicosia as part of their protest.
