Stateless Association: Mixed Marriage Case to Be Taken Under International Scrutiny

Following the rejection of Eda Hançer Akkor’s case by the Supreme Court, the Stateless Association has announced that the struggle for the rights of children born into mixed marriages will now proceed to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), placing the issue under international oversight.

The case, which challenged the Republic of Cyprus’s refusal to grant citizenship to children born from mixed marriages, was dismissed by the court earlier this week. Akkor had filed the case after years of bureaucratic and legal obstacles faced by families where one parent is a Turkish Cypriot and the other a citizen of a third country.

The Stateless Association, which has been supporting the case, attended the court session alongside various supporters and civil society organisations. In a statement issued after the hearing, the association noted that it would wait for the official reasoning behind the ruling before making a more detailed public statement. However, it emphasized the significance of this stage, declaring that the case will now escalate to a broader legal arena.

“This marks a turning point,” the association said. “The matter has now transcended the Republic of Cyprus’s discretionary space and entered the realm of international legal mechanisms and oversight.”

The association stressed that their struggle will continue beyond this case, expanding into other areas of rights-based advocacy until tangible results are achieved.
