Maviş: We Will Appeal to the ECHR for Children of Mixed Marriages Within 4 Months

KTÖS General Secretary Burak Maviş stated that the Supreme Court of South Cyprus did not see any element of discrimination in the issue of citizenship for children born from mixed marriages, and that they would take the matter to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) within four months. He expressed optimism about the process.

Burak Maviş, the General Secretary of the Cyprus Turkish Teachers’ Union (KTÖS), made significant statements regarding the issue during a phone interview on the "Morning News" program, hosted by Canan Onurer on Kıbrıs Postası TV.
Maviş began by evaluating the decision made by the Supreme Court of South Cyprus regarding the citizenship rights of children born from mixed marriages.
He pointed out that people are constantly searching for solutions to enable their children to obtain Cyprus Republic identity cards, noting that "the legal path is one of these efforts."
"THERE WILL BE NO LOSER IN THIS CASE"
Maviş recalled that Eda Hançer Akkor initiated the legal process in 2015, and that the case was lost in the lower court in 2020. "After 2020, the process continued in the Supreme Court. Finally, the decision was announced recently. As we have said before, there will be no loser in this case," he remarked.
He highlighted that children born from mixed marriages have been deprived of their citizenship rights due to their parents entering the country from areas outside the control of the Cyprus Republic. He shared the following details regarding the issue:
"This situation was also confirmed by the court. The reasoned decision was delivered in Greek last night. The court stated that there was no discrimination and made a political remark. It was suggested that the Greek Cypriot government, due to the division of the country after 1974 and the denial of rights in Northern Cyprus, could make such a decision."
"WE WILL TAKE THE CITIZENSHIP ISSUE FOR CHILDREN OF MIXED MARRIAGES TO THE ECHR WITHIN 4 MONTHS"
Maviş emphasized that within four months, they would take the issue of citizenship for children of mixed marriages to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). He pointed out that the South Cyprus Supreme Court's claim that there was no element of discrimination was a significant point, adding, "We believe there is discrimination. We will take the matter to Geneva under European law."
Expressing optimism about the process, Maviş stated, "The ECHR will resolve this issue by examining how marriage issues between countries are addressed under the Constitution of the Cyprus Republic."
