Teacher Unions Appeal to Constitutional Court Over Headscarf Regulation

Teacher unions KTÖS and KTOEÖS, along with supporting organizations, have applied to the Constitutional Court for an injunction against the disciplinary regulation change, known as the "Headscarf Regulation," which allows children to wear headscarves.

The unions, speaking outside the court, emphasized their commitment to continue fighting against the regulation through all available means, including legal action.
KTOEÖS President Selma Eylem stated that they would not allow any interference with the secular nature of the Turkish Cypriot community. She also mentioned upcoming demonstrations, including one in Kyrenia this evening.
KTÖS General Secretary Burak Maviş stated that the legal case was well-prepared with the help of numerous legal experts and emphasized the importance of protecting the freedom of girls' attire in a secular society.
Maviş criticized government leaders, particularly Ersin Tatar, for attempting to shift the public agenda with articles by journalists and reiterated their opposition to any attempts to impose religious practices in schools. He also expressed solidarity with journalist Ayşemden Akın, who faced threats after exposing state-mafia connections.
