Erhürman: Holding Children Accountable and the EU’s Silence Are Unacceptable

Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Tufan Erhürman voiced his support for the protest organised today by the Association of the Stateless, condemning both the Republic of Cyprus’s treatment of children born to mixed marriages and the European Union’s silence on the issue.

In a statement shared on social media, Erhürman said:
“Today, a mass application was submitted in the south by the Association of the Stateless on behalf of our children whose one parent is a citizen of the Republic of Cyprus—those born from so-called ‘mixed marriages’—in defence of their human rights. About a month ago, President Christodoulides stated that he would ‘fully respect’ the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights on the matter.”
Erhürman stressed that one does not need to wait for a court decision to recognise the discriminatory nature of a system that bases children’s rights on who their parents are or where they were married.
"'European values', ‘principles’, ‘human rights’… These are always applied selectively, like a one-sided blade,” he said. “We will oppose this whenever and wherever we see it—whether it’s on this side or the other. But the Republic of Cyprus making children pay the price, and the European Union remaining silent, is simply unacceptable under any circumstances.”
He concluded by affirming his party’s continued support for the affected families:
“We stand, and will continue to stand, firmly on the side of our children and their families in this rightful struggle—today and always.”
