In a statement released on the occasion of World Environment Day on 5 June, Ataoğlu highlighted the urgent need to address plastic pollution and emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to environmental protection.

According to the statement from the ministry, Ataoğlu noted that this year’s World Environment Day theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” draws attention to the devastating impact of plastic waste on nature, seas, soil, and human health. “Our expectation from citizens is to steer clear of single-use plastics and choose nature-friendly alternatives,” he said.

“Significant Legal Steps Taken to Curb Plastic Waste”

Ataoğlu underlined the government’s commitment to the “zero waste” movement, citing the regulation titled Reducing the Environmental Impact of Single-Use Plastic Products, which came into effect on 11 January 2023, as a major step forward. Inspections to control plastic products are ongoing, carried out with diligence by Environmental Protection Department investigators.

He also announced that changes to the Environmental Law (Law No. 18/2012) have been completed to minimize the use of plastic bags, with the new provisions coming into force on 1 January 2026.

Solid Waste and Wildlife Management in Progress

Regarding solid waste management, Ataoğlu said preparations for a tender for the reactivation of the Güngör Solid Waste Disposal Site have reached the final stage. “With the strong support of the Republic of Turkey’s Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, we are close to launching the tender process for one of the country’s most pressing problems,” he stated, expressing full confidence in finding a swift solution.

He also provided updates on the Donkey Management Project, aimed at finding a permanent and sustainable solution for the wild donkeys roaming the Karpas Peninsula. The initiative prioritizes animal welfare while balancing environmental concerns.

Protecting Endangered Species and Enhancing Monitoring

Ataoğlu noted that Northern Cyprus is home to endangered species such as the Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas sea turtles, with conservation efforts intensifying during nesting periods in several key coastal areas.

He added that air quality is continuously monitored across the country. Since February 2023, the Fuel Quality Laboratory has been analyzing imported charcoal, industrial coal, and fuel oil to ensure compliance with environmental standards.

“New Systems and Infrastructure Underway”

Alo 123, the ministry’s environmental complaints hotline, remains active for citizens to report issues directly.

In collaboration with the European Union, the installation of continuous Noise Monitoring Systems across the country has already begun, with completion expected by July. Moreover, the ministry is working on establishing a Water Quality Laboratory within the Environmental Protection Department, also funded by the EU. The lab is projected to become operational in 2025.
