Tatar: I Will Not Remain Silent in the Face of Hostile Actions

President Ersin Tatar has stated that accusations targeting the Immovable Property Commission—recognized by the European Court of Human Rights as an effective domestic remedy—as well as individuals conducting transactions through the Commission, clearly demonstrate a politically motivated, rather than legal, agenda.

According to a statement from the Presidency, Tatar held a briefing yesterday with the leaders of political parties represented in the Parliament, focusing on the Greek Cypriot Administration’s hostile policies targeting individuals conducting legal transactions regarding immovable properties in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

During the meeting, President Tatar said they had the opportunity to thoroughly assess the unacceptable actions targeting citizens’ property rights, security, and national institutions. He stated that the Greek Cypriot leadership’s efforts to issue arrest warrants and involve international mechanisms such as Interpol against individuals who have lawfully acquired immovable property within TRNC borders constitute a politically driven campaign of pressure aimed not just at individuals, but at the entire Turkish Cypriot community.

President Tatar said:

"Property transactions within the TRNC have been conducted in a stable and lawful manner for years in accordance with our Constitution and laws. The Immovable Property Commission, which forms the backbone of this system, has been recognised by the European Court of Human Rights as an effective domestic remedy; the majority of monitoring procedures before the Council of Europe have been concluded on this basis. The accusations against this internationally recognised body and the individuals who act through it clearly indicate a politically motivated approach rather than a legal one.

Despite this well-established legal framework, the Greek Cypriot leadership’s attempt to implement coercive policies for political purposes represents nothing more than the instrumentalisation of law. Even Greek Cypriot courts have acknowledged that these rulings prioritise political agendas over justice, underlining the severity of the situation.

I cannot and will not remain silent in the face of such hostile actions targeting the property rights, freedom of movement, and dignity of the Turkish Cypriot people. I reject the pressure being placed on the legitimacy of our Immovable Property Commission and other national institutions, and I will continue to take the necessary political and legal steps to defend our people’s rights with determination."
