The flight was at an altitude of around 36,000 feet when the captain made an emergency landing at Izmir airport, just one hour and 20 minutes after takeoff.

According to the AirLive platform, the plane “suddenly turned west of Turkey and began its descent” to Izmir airport, where emergency teams attended to the aircraft as a precautionary measure.

All passengers disembarked and were provided with hotel accommodation and meals.

An easyJet spokesperson confirmed the flight was diverted due to a technical issue that caused a smell of smoke in the cabin. The company said the flight to Bristol would be completed later the same day on a different aircraft.

Passenger and crew safety is a top priority,” the spokesman said, adding that its fleet operates “in full compliance with manufacturers’ instructions.”

“We thank passengers for their understanding and apologize for the inconvenience,” easyJet concluded.
