Kombos Urges EU to Take Active Role in Middle East

According to Fileleftheros, Kombos emphasised that the EU must adopt clear positions and assume a role in the region, particularly in response to escalating tensions. He specifically urged EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas to engage in direct dialogue with all involved parties and to lead diplomatic efforts.

Kombos underlined the importance of EU involvement in de-escalation initiatives and coordination for the safety of EU citizens in the region. Reiterating the Greek Cypriot administration's proposal on Gaza, he also called on Kallas to begin immediate consultations with Israel regarding humanitarian aid.

In a statement following the meeting, the Greek Cypriot Foreign Ministry said the purpose of the Council gathering was to coordinate responses to rapidly evolving developments in the region. The Ministry noted that Kombos described the situation as highly critical and warned that the coming days would be decisive.

The statement added that Kombos shared details of his recent contacts with counterparts from the Arab world and urged the EU to formulate a clear position and take on a substantive role—both institutionally and through its member states. He stressed the need to prevent further escalation of tensions in the region.

The report also cited remarks from EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, who reiterated that diplomacy is the only path to stability in the Middle East. She emphasised the need to uphold international law and exercise restraint.
