590 Major Criminal Cases Closed in Two Years, Heavy Caseload Remains

Figures announced at the closing session of the 2024-2025 judicial year at the Lefkoşa (Nicosia) High Criminal Court reveal the extent of crime rates and judicial workload in the country.

According to Senior Prosecutor Mustafa İldeniz, a total of 590 major criminal cases were concluded during the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 judicial years. Of these, 463 cases originated from Lefkoşa District Court, 104 from Güzelyurt, and 23 from Lefke District Court before being referred to the High Criminal Court.
However, the judicial burden is far from over. Currently, 59 cases have been carried over to the new judicial year, and an additional 374 cases await referral to the High Criminal Court.
Court President Füsun Cemaller reported that out of the 331 cases concluded this year, 147 involved drug-related crimes. She also noted that five murder cases are expected to be heard in the upcoming term.
Highlighting the rise in crime, President Cemaller emphasized, “The fight against crime cannot be placed solely on the shoulders of the judiciary,” calling for a comprehensive, society-wide effort to address the issue.
