Fidias’ Interview with Tatar Sparks Backlash from Greek Cypriot Parties

The recent interview between Greek Cypriot Member of the European Parliament Fidias Panayiotou and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has triggered a wave of criticism from political parties and officials in the south. The incident, which took place at the Presidential Palace in North Nicosia and was filmed for Fidias’s YouTube channel, has been widely condemned as aiding “Turkish propaganda.”

Widespread Political Condemnation
Greek Cypriot daily Fileleftheros reported the event under the headline “Everyone Dances to Fidias’s Rhythm,” noting that once again the YouTuber has stirred both the government and political parties. The paper said Tatar did not hesitate to use the meeting as a propaganda tool and present it as a form of recognition.
DIKO accused Fidias of either failing to understand or deliberately ignoring that his actions serve the Turkish side’s narrative and are used against the Republic of Cyprus in propaganda efforts.
EDEK, using harsh language, said Fidias had “consciously committed an immoral act” by meeting with “the representative of the occupation,” adding that he had insulted those who lost everything due to “the Turkish invasion.”
DIPA emphasized that Fidias should be aware of the responsibilities that come with his office, both in public and private life, and denounced his “apolitical and superficial” approach to serious national issues.
ELAM accused Fidias of being an “open collaborator of Turkish propaganda,” claiming his actions gave political legitimacy to the “pseudo-state” and dishonored the memory of the missing and the dead.
The Greens (Ecologists) stated that the Cyprus issue is not a topic for YouTube clips or political showmanship, and stressed that such serious matters must not be reduced to spectacle.
Media Reaction
Alithia reported on the backlash under the title “Fidias Continues His Buffoonery,” describing how the newly elected MEP’s visit to the Presidential Palace for an interview with Tatar provoked institutional and political responses.
Haravgi, meanwhile, headlined its coverage “Government Regrets Fidias Due to Tatar,” highlighting the administration's disapproval over the MEP’s actions.
The incident has fueled a broader debate in the south over political responsibility, institutional representation, and the boundaries of public conduct by elected officials.
