Tatar: Greek Cypriot Side Wants Corridor, Not Crossing Point

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has rejected proposals by the Greek Cypriot side to establish what he described as a “corridor” rather than a crossing point, declaring, “They cannot pass through my land. It is not possible for us to approve a corridor.”

Speaking to Ulaş Barış on Kıbrıs Postası TV, Tatar said that while he has proposed the opening of new crossing points, the Greek Cypriot side instead requested to open a corridor through the north — a proposal he firmly opposed.
“I am open to discussions on opening crossing points, but I cannot approve the creation of a corridor,” he stated, clarifying that the areas under discussion include Luricina (Louroujina) and Haspolat.
Referring to the severe traffic congestion at the Metehan crossing, Tatar described the queues as “a disgrace,” and argued that opening a new crossing at Haspolat would help alleviate pressure.
Tatar also accused Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides of intentionally escalating tensions. He pointed out that the majority of the island’s nine existing crossing points are used primarily by Greek Cypriots, with Turkish Cypriots mainly relying on the Metehan and Beyarmudu crossings.
