Erhürman: Extradition of Şener Levent Legally Impossible

Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Tufan Erhürman has stated that it is legally impossible to extradite journalist Şener Levent to Turkey following a recent arrest warrant issued against him.

In a public statement on social media, Erhürman emphasized that citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) cannot be extradited to Turkey or any other country for criminal charges, under both constitutional and legal frameworks.
Erhürman referenced Article 38 of the Constitution of the Republic of Turkey, which explicitly states: “Except for obligations arising from being a party to the International Criminal Court, a citizen cannot be extradited to a foreign country due to a crime.”
He underlined that this principle is not only a matter of legal doctrine but also a clear and undisputed rule in practice and legislation.
“In light of the court ruling in question, the extradition of Şener Levent to the Republic of Turkey is legally not possible,” Erhürman concluded.
