Denktaş Rejects Extradition Request for Levent, Citing Sovereignty

Veteran politician Serdar Denktaş has voiced strong opposition to the reported extradition request for journalist Şener Levent, who was convicted in Turkey over his writings and a cartoon. In a statement on social media, Denktaş warned that the matter goes beyond legal procedures and strikes at the core of sovereignty.

“This is not merely a technical legal issue,” Denktaş wrote. “Even taking this request under consideration would further erode an already weakened sense of sovereignty among the public.”
The former deputy prime minister argued that the request should be rejected outright, stating, “As a state with an independent judiciary, it is our duty to turn down this request.”
Denktaş’s remarks come amid growing debate over the implications of the extradition demand, with critics warning of political overreach and concerns about the independence of the judiciary in the north.
