UK Parliament Event Signals Support for South Cyprus

An event dedicated to Cyprus was held at the UK Parliament this week, with strong political messages of support expressed for South Cyprus, its upcoming EU Council presidency, and a federal solution to the Cyprus problem.

According to Haravgi, the event was organised by the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK and the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Cyprus. South Cyprus' Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Rauna, was the keynote speaker.
Rauna briefed attendees on recent developments in the Cyprus issue ahead of the upcoming five-party talks in New York and highlighted South Cyprus' forthcoming assumption of the rotating EU Council presidency, along with its geopolitical role in the region.
President of the National Federation, Christos Karaolis, praised the strengthening of ties between South Cyprus and the United Kingdom, citing recent contacts between President Nikos Christodoulides and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as well as Foreign Secretary David Lammy’s visit. He also noted the enduring connection of the Greek Cypriot diaspora in the UK.
The event, moderated by Labour MP Bambos Charalambous, featured remarks from MPs Catherine West, Wendy Morton, Christine Jardine, and Stephen Gethins. Speakers reiterated their support for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federal solution in line with UN parameters and political equality.
The report said the event underscored the UK’s political backing for South Cyprus and its position on the Cyprus issue amid regional geopolitical developments.
