25 Dead in 7 Months: Traffic Fatalities Show No Sign of Decline

President of the Association for the Prevention of Traffic Accidents, Mehmet Zeki Avcı, warned that there has been no reduction in fatal road accidents in 2025, with 25 people already killed in the first seven months of the year.

Speaking to Kıbrıs Postası, Avcı said that unless serious measures are implemented, this year’s death toll will likely match last year’s figure of 50.
Avcı criticised the lack of concrete action to reduce traffic accidents, saying, “Last year, 50 people lost their lives. This year, we’re heading in the same direction—there’s no sign of improvement.”
“It’s Not the Roads, the System Is Collapsing”
He argued that aside from minor improvements to a few roads, no real measures have been enforced. One of the biggest issues, he said, is the driver’s licence system, which he believes needs a complete overhaul for both local and foreign drivers.
“Foreigners with licences are automatically allowed behind the wheel. Their licences are converted to TRNC licences without any examination,” Avcı noted.
“Still No 24-Hour Patrols”
Avcı also highlighted the ongoing lack of 24-hour road patrols, saying this reinforces the perception among drivers that they won’t be monitored or caught.
“Penalties Exist But Have No Impact”
While traffic fines have been increased, Avcı said enforcement remains weak—particularly when it comes to drunk driving. He pointed out that although drivers exceeding 150mg of alcohol were supposed to be prosecuted, there have been no reported cases of offenders being taken to court or imprisoned.
“Action, Not Just Words”
For Avcı, change will only come when courts begin issuing deterrent sentences. “Fines have increased, but we’re not seeing the consequences. People only become aware when they witness real-life examples. Just talking about it won’t solve anything,” he said.
