Erdoğan Rules Out Visit to South Cyprus: “Not in My Book”

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has firmly rejected any possibility of visiting the southern part of Cyprus, stating that Turkey does not recognise the Greek Cypriot administration as a legitimate state.

Speaking to reporters following his visit to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Erdoğan responded to a question on potential engagement with the South by saying, “There is absolutely no thought of such a visit. Just as they do not recognise the TRNC as a state, we do not recognise South Cyprus as a state. So in my book, there is no room for such a meeting.”
Erdoğan visited the TRNC to mark the 51st anniversary of the Turkish military intervention on the island. During his speech in Nicosia, he reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to the Turkish Cypriot people and the two-state solution. “The Peace Operation of 1974 put an end to the Enosis dream. Our heroic armed forces, together with the Turkish Cypriot fighters, brought peace to the island by stopping the bloodshed that had continued since 1963,” he said.
The Turkish leader stressed that the peace achieved on the island had lasted for over half a century and would continue with Turkey’s firm support. “The Turkish Cypriots will forever live freely in their homeland,” he declared.
Erdoğan also held a meeting with TRNC President Ersin Tatar, where both leaders reiterated their shared vision for a settlement based on two states. “We confirmed the reality that there are two separate peoples and two separate states on the island,” Erdoğan said.
The visit included the opening and foundation-laying ceremonies for several infrastructure projects, such as the New Nicosia State Hospital and the Nicosia Northern Ring Road Interchange. Erdoğan highlighted that these investments were part of broader economic and financial cooperation agreements aimed at improving the welfare of Turkish Cypriots.
“Today’s opening of the new Maraş Health Centre will further ease access to healthcare for the local population,” he noted.
Erdoğan concluded by reaffirming Turkey’s continued support as a motherland and guarantor power: “As we’ve seen again today, we will stand by the Turkish Cypriot people as they take steps toward a prosperous future.”
