Erhürman Vows to Speak Out on Rights of Children from Mixed Marriages

Speaking at a public meeting in Güvercinlik, Erhürman criticised the growing neglect of both internal issues and the Cyprus problem by the current leadership. He argued that the presidency should not be confined to foreign affairs but must also play a leading role in addressing domestic challenges, from public security to economic decline.

“Thousands of children born from mixed marriages are still being denied their right to EU citizenship,” Erhürman said. “And we do not see anyone actively fighting for this basic human right. But we will no longer remain silent. These rights must be voiced with courage.”

Erhürman, accompanied by CTP Secretary-General Erkut Şahali and Famagusta District Chair Oktay Kayalp, was met with strong support in the village. He emphasised that the upcoming October election would be critical for the future of the country.

Reflecting on the past five years, Erhürman listed mounting problems in the economy, health, and education sectors. He highlighted rapid demographic changes and said the government had failed to take any meaningful action.

“There hasn’t even been a single round of negotiations on the Cyprus issue. And when it comes to internal matters, the presidency has completely abdicated its role,” he stated. “We can’t count our population, we can’t find beds in hospitals, and the economy is deteriorating. Yet the presidency has shown no initiative on any of these issues.”

Erhürman warned that the country is facing its most serious internal security crisis in history and is on the brink of becoming unlivable. “For five years, we’ve faced a crisis of seriousness and leadership,” he said. “The presidency must take charge of internal affairs, too.”
