EMU Denies “Enrollment Scandal” Allegations: Baseless and Misleading

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) has dismissed allegations of a “fake enrollment” scandal as baseless and misleading, asserting that all registration procedures are conducted under the supervision of Turkey’s Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and the Higher Education Accreditation and Coordination Board (YÖDAK) of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

In a statement released by the EMU Rector’s Office, the university addressed a report published by a local media outlet on 21 July 2025, titled “16-Year Enrollment Scandal at EMU!” The university stated that the claims made in the report were false, deliberately distorted, and intended to mislead the public. EMU also noted the publication’s timing—during an ongoing university preference and registration period—was indicative of bad faith.

The Rector’s Office emphasized that no form of "fake enrollment" exists at the university and that all registration procedures are carried out transparently and in accordance with EMU’s bylaws and regulations. The process, it said, is routinely audited by both YÖK and YÖDAK.

The university further contended that the report’s claim regarding “students appearing as active in the system since 2008” was a deliberate misrepresentation. It clarified that these students include those who have frozen their registration, transferred laterally, have special circumstances, or are still engaged in academic processes—and that there is no indication of misconduct.

The university also denied allegations that some students “do not know the location of the university” or “renew their registration without ever visiting the campus.” It stressed that all students enrolled at EMU are systematically monitored through identity verification, academic tracking, and registration oversight.

EMU stated that the report lacked any documentation, official sources, or verifiable information, and that it represented a clear violation of professional journalism standards and ethical responsibilities.

The university warned that such unfounded and malicious reporting not only targets EMU but also undermines trust in the higher education system of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the regulatory oversight of Turkey’s Council of Higher Education.

EMU concluded by calling on the media outlet in question to uphold journalistic responsibility and ethical principles, and announced it would pursue all legal avenues in response to the allegations.
