Democratic Party: National Intelligence Structure Is Essential for the State’s Existence
Democratic Party (DP) Secretary-General Serhat Akpınar has called for the urgent establishment of an official national intelligence unit to safeguard the security, sovereignty, and existence of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), stressing the need for a strong structure to counter manipulation and external pressures that weaken state authority.
Highlighting the increasing external threats and structural deficiencies in the field of intelligence, Akpınar urged the government to act immediately.
“The threats against the sustainable existence and sovereign rights of the TRNC are growing,” he said. “We face a serious shortfall in one of the most critical areas — intelligence and counterintelligence.”
Akpınar underlined that the TRNC urgently needs an official intelligence organisation authorised by the constitution and laws, noting that foreign intelligence agencies, particularly those from the Greek Cypriot Administration, are conducting multifaceted activities on the island.
