Eylem Urges Teachers’ Appointments Not to Be Politicized

Selma Eylem, Chairperson of the Cyprus Turkish Secondary Education Teachers’ Union (KTOEÖS), has warned against turning teacher appointments into election tools and filling schools with politically motivated temporary staff. The union claims recent transfers and staffing decisions lack transparency and violate teachers’ rights, and announced legal action on behalf of members whose transfer rights were allegedly infringed.

In a statement signed by Eylem, the union highlighted that despite repeated meetings with the Public Service Commission, written warnings, organised actions, and formal notices delivered through lawyers, “unjust and unfair” transfers have continued. The statement noted that while the Commission has declared that appointments are subject to election restrictions, staffing needs remain unannounced and 12 teaching branches have not been advertised, leaving some teachers unable to be appointed. Additionally, concerns were raised over the lack of transparency in exam questions and the validity and reliability of the selection process.

Eylem said, “This approach, which ignores education, schools, and teachers awaiting appointments while fostering chaos, is the clearest indication that the Commission has become an institution that legitimizes government policies.”

KTOEÖS called on the government and the Public Service Commission to ensure that educational decisions are not driven by favoritism or electoral interests, that appointments occur on time outside of election restrictions, and that education is not politicized.
