Two Men Remain in Custody Over Guns, Drugs and Explosives

Durmuş Özder Gökay and Mustafa Behattin, apprehended in Nicosia and Gönyeli with firearms, ammunition, and drugs, were brought back to court. The suspects face charges of “Illegal Import, Possession and Trafficking of Drugs,” “Illegal Import and Possession of Firearms,” and “Illegal Import and Possession of Explosives.”

Police officer Cemal Ramiz testified that on August 9, the Crime Prevention Branch attempted to stop a parked vehicle in Nicosia on suspicion. The vehicle fled but was quickly intercepted in Gönyeli. Authorities seized 54,000 Turkish Lira, 4,170 Euros, 1,950 British Pounds, 201 US Dollars, and 0.5 grams of drugs from the car.
On August 10, a search of Behattin’s Nicosia residence uncovered two handguns, magazines, ammunition, 112 grams of drugs, a precision scale, and drug residues. The same day, officers found drug residues, spoons, a glass pipe, and a precision scale at Gökay’s home.
The suspects admitted importing 560 grams of drugs from Southern Cyprus, distributing part of it at various locations, and bringing the firearm from the south. Police also stated that video evidence on their phones showed the suspects firing the handguns.
With the investigation ongoing and additional persons and evidence still sought, police requested an eight-day extension of custody. Judge Şevket Gazi approved the request, keeping the suspects in detention for another eight days.
