Cyprus Considers Legal Action at European Court Over Detained Greek Cypriots

The Republic of Cyprus is studying legal measures before the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) over the illegal detention of five Greek Cypriot citizens by the occupation regime, according to a Foreign Ministry announcement.

The ministry condemns “in the strongest possible terms” the continuing detention, characterising it as “blatantly illegal, provocative and inhumane”.
It notes that the occupation regime “shows contempt for every notion of law” and that, through “abduction and hostage-taking”, it aims to intimidate and target those who appeal to the compensation committee in the occupied areas.
The announcement states that complaints and démarches have been made at UN, European Union and third state levels, which are being intensified with the aim of ending the detention of the five citizens of the Republic and the EU.
The ministry states that, due to the continuing violation of justice, all available legal remedies against Turkey are being examined, including an application to the ECHR.
