Karakum Car Dealership Shooting: 2 Suspects Detained for 8 More Days
Two men arrested in connection with the shooting of a car showroom on Uğur Mumcu Avenue in Karakum, Beraat Atız and Mehmet Kılıç, appeared before the Kyrenia court once again. Police told the court that during searches at the suspects’ homes, officers found drugs, cash, and items believed to have been used in the attack.
The incident took place on 16 August 2025, at around 2:30 a.m., when shots were fired at the showroom, damaging four vehicles. Investigators recovered seven shell casings and two bullets at the scene. Security camera footage led to the identification and arrest of Atız and Kılıç.
Police officer Kozal Debreli of the Kyrenia Criminal Investigation Department testified that searches uncovered a metal grinder, four grams of drugs, handwritten notes related to money transactions, ₺10,000 and £10,000 in cash, along with a hat and backpack believed to have been used in the shooting.
The suspects, who admitted to drug use, claimed the seized cash came from the sale of Atız’s car. Police added that the men had refused to provide passwords to their mobile phones.
Investigators said Atız may also be linked to three other shooting incidents earlier this year — two against businesses and one targeting the home of a businessman in Lapta. Kılıç was also found to have entered and exited the island around the times of some of these shootings.
Documents seized from the suspects’ home reportedly contained the name of a person linked to the shootings, but both men declined to answer police questions.
Police said footage from 15 different locations is still being reviewed and confirmed that the individual believed to have fired the shots in Karakum has been identified but has since left the island.
The court approved the police request for both suspects to remain in custody for a further eight days as the investigation continues.
