Eight Injured, Including Four Children, in Nicosia Head-On Collision
A head-on collision on Akasya Street in Nicosia on Monday evening left eight people injured, including four children.
According to the Police Press Office, the accident occurred around 8:00 PM when a sedan, license plate YY 345, driven by 41-year-old Yeşim Avcı, was traveling westward and entered the main road at the Şehit Ecvet Yusuf Street junction without yielding to oncoming traffic. While attempting to continue straight toward Şehit Hüsnü Mustafa Street, Avcı’s vehicle collided with another sedan, license plate ZD 809, driven northbound by 36-year-old Can Avşar.
The impact caused Avcı’s vehicle to spin out of control, mounting the curb and crashing into the wall and glass storefront of a nearby business.
Those injured were transported to Nicosia Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital. They include Yeşim Avcı, passengers Masal Demirtaş (4), Murat Demirtaş (11), Elif Demirtaş (14), Ada Demirtaş (15), Melek Demirtaş (26), as well as Can Avşar and passenger Yıldırım Şimşek (28).
Melek Demirtaş is in the general intensive care unit with a head injury. Masal, Murat, and Elif Demirtaş are in the pediatric intensive care unit with head trauma and brain hemorrhaging. Ada Demirtaş has a fractured hip and is under orthopedic care. Yeşim Avcı is in the surgical unit with spinal and rib fractures, while Can Avşar and Yıldırım Şimşek remain under observation in the emergency department.
