Özuslu: Under Tatar, Society Regressed to Pre-2003

Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV’s Gündem program with Ulaş Barış, Özuslu said that no gains have been made on the Cyprus issue in the past five years, and that society has become inward-looking, with realtors and contractors now hesitant to travel abroad.

“No One We Visited Expressed Satisfaction with Tatar”
Özuslu emphasized that in all areas they visited, not a single person expressed satisfaction with President Tatar, whereas many showed support for Erhürman, perceiving him as a leader capable of representing them. He added that their outreach will continue, leaving no village unvisited.

“We Have Lost Not Only Achievements but Also Hope in the Last Five Years”
Reflecting on the Cyprus issue, Özuslu stated, “In the last five years, we have gained nothing and lost a great deal, the worst being our hopes,” noting that society is aware of this reality.

He also criticized a clause in an agreement signed between three members of the Turkish States Organization and the EU, stating that it acknowledges no recognized state except the Republic of Cyprus, which he said has caused frustration among certain segments of society.

Regression to Pre-2003 Conditions
Özuslu warned that under Tatar’s presidency, society has become inward-looking, effectively returning to pre-2003 conditions, with realtors and contractors hesitant to travel to the south or to Turkey.

He further criticized the lack of mandatory teaching of Turkish and Greek on both sides of the island, arguing that introducing such education in primary schools would be a crucial step for fostering mutual understanding, reducing misinformation, and enhancing trust between communities.
