Speaking on Kıbrıs TV’s Gün Ortası program hosted by Elif Şen Çatal, Çavuşoğlu reviewed recent educational investments and the goals for the new academic year.

He stated, “During our term, we built 19 schools from the ground up, rebuilt 10 schools, and added a total of 29 schools. The tenders for seven more schools are almost complete, and we plan to finish them within a year.”

“Using Prefabricated Classrooms to Maximize Resources”

Following the February 6 earthquake, school safety became a top priority. Çavuşoğlu noted that classes are not allowed in risky buildings. To avoid disruptions in education, 250 prefabricated classrooms were deployed, which can later be converted into workshops, sports areas, or cafeterias. “We move prefabricated classrooms between schools to use state resources efficiently,” he added.

“Concrete Achievements”

The Minister thanked donors, municipalities, and the state for their contributions, noting that political stability enabled these projects. Responding to critics who labeled the constructions “rubble,” Çavuşoğlu said, “Construction rules require demolition first, then rebuilding. We added 580 classrooms, 109 toilets, 89 administrative units, 31 teacher rooms, and 9 libraries. These are concrete achievements.”

He also emphasized technological upgrades in schools, with thousands of computers, printers, smart boards, cameras, and furniture provided. “Teachers used to sit on cane chairs from the Greek period. Now we use furniture meeting international standards,” he said.

School Reinforcements and Class Size Goals

After the earthquake, 128 schools underwent risk assessments; 92 were examined in detail, and 14 had some buildings taken out of use. Çavuşoğlu stated, “Strengthening works for 29 schools are complete, ongoing for 9, and 10 are at the contract stage.” He added that reducing class sizes below 30 students per class is aimed at improving educational quality.

Teacher Exams and Appointments

Addressing criticisms regarding teacher appointments, Çavuşoğlu said, “For the first time in TRNC history, we held teacher exams on August 1. Even temporary teachers are hired based on exam ranking. Claims of political appointments are false. Those spreading lies will be held accountable.”

He also criticized opposition and unions: “If anyone has pulled one meter of internet cable or built one classroom, let them speak. What we have done is a thousand times more. The public will recognize those who deliver versus those who do not.”

Looking Ahead: 36 Schools Target

Concluding with his vision for the new academic year, Çavuşoğlu said, “We strengthened infrastructure, ensured safety, and integrated technology into education. Working hand-in-hand with our donors, municipalities, and the state, we will reach our target of 36 schools. The people of TRNC will appreciate this historic transformation.”
