All Five Greek Cypriot Defendants to Stand Trial Without Detention

All five Greek Cypriot defendants arrested on various charges will now stand trial without detention after the İskele District Court ruled on Friday to release the remaining two under bail conditions. Three of the defendants had already been granted release earlier in the week following a Military Court decision.

The court’s ruling means that all five — G.G. (66), A.K. (60), A.K. (60), N.G. (63) and A.L. (68) — will be tried while at liberty. The defendants are accused of “violating a military prohibited zone” after reportedly entering the TRNC through the Akyar crossing without completing immigration procedures on 19 July.

Earlier, the High Court overturned their 13-day detention order, setting strict bail terms, including a 200,000 TL cash guarantee each, a travel ban, and weekly reporting to police.

During the investigation, police witnesses confirmed that the initial complaint in the related Simon Aykut case was filed by Burçin Döveç, followed by Ceyhun Tunalı and Ahmet Noyan, but noted that the complainants had never seen the accused. Police also stated that the list of those who had filed complaints against Aykut is kept at Police Headquarters.

Defense lawyers argued that the case contained serious investigative gaps and alleged that police had detained the defendants based on name confusion, detaining them “out of spite.”
