Serdar Denktaş: ‘Neither Federation Nor Two-State Solution Is Possible'

Serdar Denktaş, founding leader of the Social Justice Struggle Party (Tam Parti), said both a federation and a two-state solution are unrealistic under current conditions, stressing that CTP leader Tufan Erhürman is ahead when it comes to representing the Turkish Cypriot community.

Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV, Denktaş said they were preparing for a possible early election in February and praised the strong public interest in his party and the energy of its young members.
Explaining why he chose to support Erhürman, Denktaş said, “If you strip both candidates of their political views and put them on the scales, who can represent the Turkish Cypriot people? Erhürman is clearly ahead.” He argued that both federation and a two-state solution are no longer feasible, leaving only the question of which candidate can best fulfill the duty of representation.
Denktaş criticized the level of representation under President Ersin Tatar compared with previous presidents, saying, “It is obvious how far we have fallen in terms of representation.” He added that he had worked with Erhürman before and was confident that Erhürman “would not cause problems in relations with Turkey, and could even take them further.”
Rejecting claims that he is a federalist, Denktaş said a federation could only exist between two politically equal entities. “If one side is a state and the other is a community, that is not a federation; that community simply becomes an appendage,” he said, adding that he would continue to work to ensure the TRNC is a fully recognized state “despite the entire world.”
He also dismissed recent criticism from Hasan Taçoy as “unfortunate,” suggesting that Taçoy had been pressured to make such remarks, and reminded that DP had once welcomed Taçoy and other MPs into its ranks, allowing him to continue his political career.
Denktaş underlined that his political stance has never changed and is rooted in the vision of his father, Rauf Raif Denktaş, adapted to today’s realities. He said Tam Parti’s goal is not just to cross the electoral threshold but “to come to power strongly,” as only then could they bring real change, leaving the decision to the people.
