Başaran Düzgün: You Should Not Interfere in the Elections of the State You Want Recognized

Speaking on the program Gündem on Kıbrıs Postası TV, hosted by Ulaş Barış, Düzgün first evaluated the recent UN General Assembly, noting that aside from routine contacts, no substantial progress was made for the Turkish Cypriot side. He nevertheless described Erdoğan’s recognition appeal—made for the fourth time—as an important development.

“Claims of Turkish Officials Arriving in Support of Tatar Contradict Recognition Appeal”

Commenting on Erdoğan’s other statements regarding the TRNC, Düzgün said the recognition call should be backed by practical measures. He pointed out that claims suggesting “bureaucrats and officials from Turkey will arrive in support of Tatar” contradicted Erdoğan’s own recognition rhetoric.

“Such Actions Harm Turkey’s Position on the Island”

Düzgün stressed that such actions and statements harm Turkey’s standing on the island and could, in fact, lend credibility to the Greek Cypriot side’s allegations of interference.

“Soylu and Erbaş Came on Their Own Initiative”

Comparing the current situation with the 2020 elections, Düzgün stated: “I have not seen an official intervention involving all of Turkey’s state institutions and intelligence agencies, as was the case then.” He added that he believes Süleyman Soylu and Ahmet Erbaş came to the island on their own initiative.

Reiterating his warning, Düzgün said that if the allegations of interference prove true, it would seriously undermine the independence policy: “You should not do this to the state you want recognized.”
