“CLEAN POLITICS, SOCIETAL DIGNITY”

Maviş highlighted that the election represented more than just political change. It signalled a demand for “clean politics, social honour, and the right to self-governance.” He stated, “The people have taken a clear stance against authoritarian tendencies, corruption, and external interference in democratic processes. Instead, they have reaffirmed their commitment to human rights and the rule of law.”

He outlined expectations from the new president, calling for an inclusive, transparent, and participatory leadership. Maviş emphasised the need for a governance approach that opens democratic participation in areas ranging from education and the economy to social policy and the Cyprus problem. He also stressed the community’s priority for concrete steps to protect EU citizenship rights and equal rights within the Republic of Cyprus.

“A TURNING POINT IN CYPRUS TURKISH POLITICS”

Maviş told Evrensel that the election results marked a turning point in Cyprus Turkish politics. “This outcome is not just political change; it is the existence struggle of a society that asserts its identity, will, and democratic values,” he said. He added that the public had expressed its long-standing discontent with corruption and external interference at the ballot box.

Regarding the impact on the Cyprus issue and Turkey–TRNC relations, Maviş stated: “These results reaffirm the Cyprus Turkish community’s commitment to peace, equality, and self-governance. Relations with Turkey should be based on mutual respect, acknowledging societal will, and fostering a modern and equal dialogue.”

“THE WILL FOR CHANGE HAS BEEN TRIGGERED”

Maviş noted that the association of the island with money laundering, gambling, and illicit economies through Turkey had triggered the desire for change. He stressed that societal conscience has awakened, making the continuation of this corrupt system unsustainable. “Clean governance, accountability, and a focus on public interest are now common demands of the society. KTÖS is part of this struggle,” he added.

He also criticised MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli’s annexation rhetoric as disrespectful to the public will, noting that the people responded firmly at the ballot box. Maviş concluded by underlining that the Cyprus Turkish community had once again demonstrated its commitment to peace, coexistence, and a culture of compromise, adding, “Now it is time for this spirit to be reciprocally recognised.”
