Suspect in Dimostenus Murder Escapes via Northern Cyprus to Turkey and Greece
One of the suspects in the murder of Stavros Dimostenus, who was shot dead on 17 October in Southern Cyprus, is reported to have fled via the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to Turkey, and then on to Greece.
According to Politis and other local outlets, the 31-year-old suspect arrested last Saturday was accused in a Limassol District Court hearing of helping one of the murder suspects escape through the TRNC to Turkey and then to Greece.
Currently, six individuals linked to the murder remain in custody in Southern Cyprus, while two suspects detained in Greece are expected to be extradited. Investigators are also examining ten vehicles believed to be used in connection with the crime.
Reports indicate that one of these vehicles was used by the 31-year-old suspect to transport a fellow suspect to the TRNC via the “Ayios Demetios” (Metehan) border crossing the day after the murder. The suspects then reportedly took a car ferry from Kyrenia to Turkey, continuing overland to Greece. Greek authorities in Thessaloniki have reportedly confirmed the journey with supporting documentation found in the vehicle.
The reports note that these details were also confirmed by the Bicommunal Technical Committee. The 31-year-old suspect claims he traveled to the TRNC and Turkey alone, encountering a 28-year-old suspect in Greece by chance.
Alithia newspaper framed the story under the headline: “Escape Plan via Occupied Territories”, highlighting the cross-border aspect of the suspect’s flight.
