Atun: “We Will Not Allow Our Party to Be Debated”
The Republic Assembly General Assembly convened today to discuss the legislative agenda. Speaking in response to CTP General Secretary Erkut Şahali’s proposal of an early election on 22 March 2026, UBP Deputy Group Leader Sunat Atun described Şahali’s remarks as “overly enthusiastic.”
“Each Party Has Its Own Internal Dynamics”
Atun reacted to Şahali’s references to UBP’s internal processes, stating: “I found Mr. Şahali quite excited today. However, every party has its own internal dynamics. The General Assembly floor is not the place to discuss them.” He reminded that the internal agenda of CTP is CTP’s matter, not UBP’s, adding: “We are not debating your party congress here either.”

Atun continued by emphasizing UBP’s opposition to being targeted on the parliamentary podium. “We will not allow our party to be debated from these podiums,” he said, noting that Prime Minister Ünal Üstel’s statements on the election process clearly reflect both UBP’s and the government’s stance. Atun added that the government has a clear position on early elections and concluded: “There is no need for speculation in the Assembly on this matter.”
